Rescuers help driver escape fiery crash in DeBary

An investigation is underway after a fiery crash on U.S. Highway 17-92 on Saturday that injured two drivers, prompting citizen rescuers to take action.

Rescued driver Raymond Michael Jandoli, 57, of Orlando was being treated in the intensive-care unit at Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford and is expected to survive, Volusia County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Andrew Gant said Monday.

Concerned citizens helped Jandoli escape from his burning 2017 Volkswagen SUV after the crash, Gant said.

The other driver, Dylan Deggeller, 18, of DeLand was also taken to the Sanford hospital, sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, Gant said.

Deputies were called to the crash at U.S. Highway 17-92 (also called Charles R. Beall Boulevard) and Glen Forest Boulevard at about 9 p.m.

“The initial investigation revealed a blue 2017 Volkswagen SUV pulled out from Glen Forest into the path of a white 2012 Jeep SUV traveling south on Charles R. Beall,” Gant said in a statement. “The Volkswagen SUV was fully engulfed in flames when deputies arrived.”

The Orange City Fire Department, which provides fire services in DeBary, also responded.

The crash happened near the entrance to the Reserve subdivision.  No additional information was immediately available.

Tori Otway killed: Teen dies in DeBary rollover crash

Friends and family members shared prayers, sympathy and sorrow after the death of 19-year-old Tori Otway in a single-vehicle rollover crash in DeBary on Sunday.

“Prayers go out to you and your family,” a Facebook user told Otway’s uncle.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, said Laura Williams, a spokesman for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash investigation closed Shell Road for about nine hours, according to Williams. Orange City Fire Rescue pronounced her dead at the scene.

Otway was ejected from the 2003 Ford Escape SUV she was driving when it landed on its passenger side in parking area at 475. S. Shell Road. That’s in an industrial and commercial area south of the Springview subdivision.

“She was not wearing a seat belt,” Williams said in a statement. Otway was the only occupant.

She graduated from Deltona High School in 2016 and attended Daytona State College, according to her Facebook page.

Public records list her address as Deltona but she had recently been staying with a friend in DeBary.

Williams said Otway drove from the home at 1:10 a.m.

“Investigators said she drove west on Benson Junction, turned onto South Shell Road northbound, and the vehicle left the roadway, struck a curb and re-entered the roadway,” the statement said.

“The vehicle crossed the road and flipped onto its side, then rolled onto its roof in a parking area at 475 S. Shell Road.

DeBary crash after chase ends with 3 arrests

An urgent voice crackled over the airwaves.

“They’re getting off at Dirksen. They’re getting off at Dirksen.”

Minutes later, three suspects – accused Ormond Beach cell-phone store robbers  — roared off Interstate 4 and crashed in DeBary as a Volusia County Sheriff’s Office chopper captured the action.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood spotted the suspects’ vehicle — a white Dodge — heading south on Interstate 95.

Cops were looking for the vehicle after three suspects robbed an AT&T store in Ormond Beach on Aug. 29.

The store’s clerk was shoved into a counter and several iPhones were stolen.

Chitwood spotted the getaway vehicle and called in a description and tag number.

The driver refused to stop for a traffic stop. Chitwood radioed in that it failed to stop and started to flee on Interstate 4 heading west.

“Sheriff Chitwood authorized a vehicle pursuit for his agency and pursued the vehicle with marked VCSO Deputy Sheriffs car and FHP marked patrol car,” a report said.

Chitwood said the vehicle then got off at Dirksen Drive heading west.

“The vehicle then crashed near Dirksen Drive/Grande Vista Street. The three occupants of the vehicle then started to run on foot from within the vehicle,” the report said.

Deputies told them to stop – but only two did: Wendell Harp, 18, and Sheldric J. Slater, 19.

Daraja Adero Tinsley, 20,  ran, according to a report and chopper video.

Deputies with two K-9 police dogs later took Tinsley later down near Dirksen and Agua Vista drives in DeBary.” A report said he was taken for medical treatment but details were not released.
