22-year-old Arrested After Police Chase Through Massachusetts and Rhode Island
A man has been arrested after allegedly being followed down Massachusetts and Rhode Island roadways.
According to Newton Police Chief John Carmichael Jr., at around 6:30 p.m. on Friday, officers were summoned to the Riverside MBTA Station parking lot for an unconscious male inside a red Mercedes.
Before arrival, dispatch told officers that the car in question had been pursued by Rhode Island officers earlier in the evening as it proceeded into Massachusetts on Interstate 95.
Massachusetts State Police pursued the vehicle as it went northbound on Interstate 95. Because of the vehicle’s operation and excessive speeds, it exited the highway at Norwood, and the pursuit ended.
Newton cops located the vehicle in the MBTA parking lot, and cops Acuna, Baia, and Sullivan attempted to stop it before approaching the subject. Despite their efforts, the suspect, 22-year-old Emanuel Salmeron of Providence, managed to escape and attempted to depart the property. Officers were able to keep the suspect contained in the MBTA lot, preventing a further pursuit.
Officers Acuna, Sullivan, Baia, McSweeney, Murphy, Pelegrini, and Sergeants McLean and Healy stopped the suspicious vehicle from leaving the lot, potentially causing a dangerous scenario on the road.
Officers were able to corner Salmeron in the lot, and during containment, he drove to an access road, where Officer Kayla Donahue and Captain Dennis Dowling pursued him between multiple buildings and around the perimeter of the grounds. After a brief chase inside the lot, Salmeron abandoned the car and escaped to the MBTA tracks on foot.
Officer Donahue and Captain Dowling after Salmeron on foot, and after a brief chase, they managed to corner him between a fence along the Woodland Apartments and the MBTA tracks.
As Salmeron surrendered, Officer Donahue jumped down a five-foot retaining wall, through heavy underbrush, and helped Captain Dowling take him into jail without incident.
Salmeron was charged with failing to stop for a police officer, operating a motor vehicle recklessly, two counts of assault with a dangerous weapon (driving at officers), and resisting arrest.
Salmeron was turned up to the Massachusetts State Police.
