The Prince George’s County Police Department has provided a comprehensive account of the events that transpired, highlighting the swift actions of law enforcement in the face of potential danger.
The incident began when detectives were monitoring a vehicle that had been reported as carjacked at gunpoint the previous day. This vehicle was spotted in the 5700 block of Silver Hill Road, prompting a closer observation by the officers on duty. It was during this surveillance that two men were observed exiting the car and entering the GameStop store.
In an attempt to manage the situation safely, officers followed the suspects into the store, issuing a command for the men to drop any weapons they possessed. However, the situation escalated as the suspects fled the store through a back door, leading to a confrontation in the parking lot.
The encounter in the parking lot reached a critical moment when 24-year-old Edward Leroy Brown, one of the suspects, charged towards a detective. In response, the detective discharged his weapon, resulting in Brown being struck in the lower body. Brown was promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was later released.
Simultaneously, 26-year-old Kanard Bishop, another suspect involved in the incident, was apprehended at the scene. A search of the area led to the recovery of two firearms in the parking lot, shedding light on the potential threat posed by the suspects.
Further investigation identified an 18-year-old individual, Kahlill Boyd, who had initially fled the scene after colliding with an unmarked police vehicle. Boyd was later located and arrested in the 300 block of Anacostia Road in Southeast D.C., adding another layer to the complex sequence of events.
The charges laid against Brown and Bishop include armed robbery, assault, and firearms offenses, reflecting the serious nature of their actions. An arrest warrant was issued for Boyd, who faces similar charges, underscoring the concerted effort by law enforcement to address and mitigate the threat posed by these individuals.
In accordance with protocol, the officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an ongoing investigation. This step ensures that a thorough and impartial review of the incident is conducted, maintaining the integrity of the law enforcement process.
