900,000 Rescues and Counting: How Shelter Animals Count Advocates for Animals
Five dogs that were rescued from an overcrowded shelter in the south are currently being housed at the Dakin Humane Society in Springfield, where they are waiting to find new families that will be their forever homes. A South Carolina shelter that was facing significant overcrowding became the recipient of the organization’s adoption of four mixed-breed siblings who were eight months old and a hound who was two years old.
Lee Chambers, a representative for the Dakin Humane Society, stated that “the fact of the matter is that South Carolina and that particular shelter, like many, many shelters, unfortunately, is facing the problem of overcrowding and a high animal population.”
Since January 2021, the number of animals that have been rescued has increased by a total of 900,000, as stated by Shelter Animals Count, an organization that advocates for animals and is situated in Atlanta.
Whenever something of such significant significance occurs in our nation, even on a national scale, such as the pandemic and the economic troubles, it affects people, and it is also going to have an effect on their pets. “That is something that cannot be avoided,” Chambers explained. Chambers also linked the overcrowding to the fact that during the epidemic, animal shelters stopped performing surgeries that were not considered essential.
“Either people were putting off getting spayed or neutered, or they were unable to get it. There was an increase in littering. It was a significant event in that regard,” Chambers pointed out.
The Dakin Animal Shelter has performed spay and neuter procedures on more than 122,000 dogs since 2009. At Dakin, the five new dogs will continue to be quarantined for a period of forty-eight hours as required by law. The adoption process will be complete once they have been examined by a veterinarian for the purpose of evaluation.
“The five puppies that we just went to see will be available at the beginning of the following week,” Chambers stated.
If you are unable to adopt one of these five canines or any other potential companion, you have lots of options to choose from at Dakin Animal Shelter. If you are unable to adopt, you may always foster or volunteer at the shelter.
