Beware the Waves: Florida’s Beaches Top Danger List

New Smyrna Beach, Fla. – As Memorial Day comes and goes, the busy beach season kicks off for Floridians. However, as you plan your summer beach trips, it’s essential to note that the country’s “most dangerous” beaches are all located in Florida.

This information is according to a new report from Simmrin Law, which analyzed factors such as hurricanes, shark attacks, and surf zone deaths to compile a list of the most perilous beaches in the U.S.

All Top 10 Beaches Are in Florida

The report highlights that all ten entries in the top 10 are in Florida. Remarkably, all top 25 spots are also in the Sunshine State, except for one outlier. South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach ranks at No. 23, according to the report.

High Risks at New Smyrna Beach

New Smyrna Beach unsurprisingly ranks No. 1 on the list. Its high ranking is due to its frequent hurricane impacts and its reputation as the “shark bite capital of the world.”

According to the source, the Florida Museum’s International Shark Attack File reports that in 2023, Volusia County, where New Smyrna Beach is located, had eight shark bites, representing half of Florida’s total.

Factors Contributing to Danger

“While shark attacks often grab headlines, Florida’s beaches rank so high due to the ever-present hurricane risk,” said Michael Simmrin of Simmrin Law. “Hurricanes create dangerous rip currents and storm surge, raising the overall risk for beachgoers.

With summer approaching and vacations on the minds of many Americans, this study shows the importance of putting safety first when considering a trip to the beach.”
