Two Students Arrested After Threats Made to Volusia County Schools

Volusia County schools faced multiple threats on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of two students. The incidents sparked significant concern as authorities worked swiftly to investigate each case and ensure the safety of students and staff.

In Daytona Beach, police received a tip at 1:44 a.m. through Fortify Florida regarding an 11-year-old Halifax Academy student. The student, upset over being rejected by a girl and taunted by peers in a text group, sent a picture of a gun and threatened to shoot fellow students and the school. Initially, the student was believed to attend Hinson Middle School, but further investigation identified the Halifax Academy student as the suspect. The 11-year-old was arrested and charged with making written threats to kill.

Later that morning, a separate incident occurred at Westside Elementary School. A 10-year-old student reportedly threatened to shoot two classmates and a substitute teacher. During a break, another student noticed a BB gun in the 10-year-old’s waistband. The student fled the school and discarded a plastic magazine over a fence, but a search of his bag uncovered BBs for the gun. The 10-year-old was arrested shortly after.

Additional threats were reported later that day. A threat was made to T. DeWitt Taylor Middle High School at 6:48 p.m., prompting an investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities visited the student’s home and confirmed no credible danger to students or the school. The school’s principal thanked the vigilant student who reported the tip.

Ormond Beach Middle School also received a threat aimed at specific students. Police investigated and determined there was no credible threat or imminent danger. A person of interest was identified but no arrests were made.
