Cher reveals she was ‘shocked’ to find out her real name after birth certificate mix-up
CHER has expressed her “shock” at finding out that her birth certificate listed a name that was quite different from what she had always assumed.
The renowned Believe singer, 78, claims that she was raised believing Cherilyn had been her legal name from birth.
However, Cher discovered that Cherilyn wasn’t actually her official name after her career took off.
The American celebrity claims that she didn’t know until she formally changed her name to Cher in the late 1970s in her new book, Cher: The Memoir, Part One.
She found that her birth certificate said “Cheryl” rather than “Cherylin” when she dug it out to make the change.
According to Cher’s memoir, her mother, Georgia Holt, was just 19 years old when she gave birth, and the labor was arduous and drawn out.

She claims that after her daughter was delivered, a nurse came up to the exhausted new mother and asked what the baby’s name was.

She continued: “I believed Cherilyn was my name until the day years later when I decided to legally change my name to simply Cher.”
The celebrity claims she was “shocked” to see the nurse had recorded her as “Cheryl” on her birth certificate.
