Due to Morgan’s error in using the stolen funds to purchase Walmart vouchers, which revealed the entrepreneur’s role in the Bitfinex hack, the criminal duo was apprehended.

In February 2022, Morgan and Lichtenstein were taken into custody.

The authorities later learned that the two had taken approximately 95,000 Bitcoins, each of which was incredibly valuable.

It was discovered that the couple would divide the money into small portions and place them in wallets while posing as someone else.

They then used their money to purchase gold coins on the darknet marketplace Alphabay, where they mingled it with illicit currencies.

Lastly, in order to make their Bitcoin appear authentic, they set up shell corporations.

Public outcry

People opposed to the digital currency as well as those in favor of it expressed strong opinions in the public.

Supporters of cryptocurrencies believed she had damaged confidence in the platform, while opponents believed she had exposed the ease with which financial crimes could be perpetrated using Bitcoin.

As a result of the dispute, Morgan gained yet another nickname: Bitcoin Bonnie.

The Biggest Heist Ever

In August 2023, Morgan eventually admitted to the crime and entered a guilty plea.

She was given an 18-month prison sentence for the offense on November 18, 2024.

Lichtenstein was sentenced to five years in prison after confessing to being responsible for the cryptocurrency hack.
