Russian hackers ‘stole HUNDREDS of Ministry of Defence passwords & leaked them on dark web’ in major security breach

In a significant security breach, hundreds of Ministry of Defense computer log-ins are said to have been stolen by Russian hacking tools.

Since 2020, cybercriminal gangs have acquired and exposed the emails and passwords of around 600 people, including members of the UK armed forces, civil officials, and defense contractors, into the dark web. The MoD is currently looking into this matter.

Email addresses and other login credentials required to access the MoD’s Defence Gateway portal, an online platform for British military personnel, are among the stolen data, according to sources.

The system is stated to be essential for worker communication, as well as for enabling access to health and human resources data, even if it does not contain classified information.

Thei’s report claims that most of the data was taken from employees who accessed the online portal on their own devices.

The site claims that the MoD informed them that they were continuously looking into credential theft.

Although the majority of the exposed employees are thought to be situated in the UK, there may be a serious security risk because some information about MoD employees located in Iraq, Qatar, Cyprus, and continental Europe has also been stolen.

According to one intelligence source, this kind of conduct frequently marks the start of an adversary’s clandestine recruitment campaign.

“Stolen data provides hackers with personal information hostile actors can then use to coerce or blackmail employees who had viewed the stolen data said they believed it posed a greater risk to the individual rather than the institution.”

They went on: “There is a serious chance that exfiltrated personal information may be used to blackmail military personnel in the future.

“These are the new techniques used by adversaries to infiltrate the UK.”
