WNBA accidentally leak expansion team online in huge website mistake ahead of official announcement
Prior to its announcement, the WNBA unintentionally posted the name of their newest expansion franchise online.
On Thursday morning, the Toronto Tempo became the 14th team in the league.
Fans began posting screenshots of a drop-down menu on WNBA.com on X on Tuesday night, about 48 hours before the announcement.
There were 14 team names on that menu, one more than the 13 that will be playing in the league the following season.
A few days later, it was verified that the Toronto Tempo was the fourteenth team on the list.
The team’s name is intended to reference Toronto’s fast-paced atmosphere.

“Pace is tempo. It’s velocity. It’s a heartbeat. In a statement, Tempo president Teresa Resch said, “It’s what you feel when you walk into the streets of this city and in the energy of the people who call Canada home.”
“As Canada s WNBA team, I know the Tempo will set our own pace, move at a championship cadence, and inspire people across this country.”
More than 10,000 city supporters took part in the Name Your Team campaign, which helped determine the team’s name.
“Tempo reflects what fans can expect from this team including, of course, the in-game experience at the arena,” Resch stated.
“The court’s sounds.” the music’s rhythm. the players’ intensity on the court and the fervor of the spectators surrounding you.
“Capturing all that energy, excitement and feeling was crucial as we chose the name for Canada s WNBA team.”
It is anticipated that Toronto and the as-yet-unnamed Portlandexpansion franchise would join the WNBA in 2026.
This year’s expansion team, the Golden State Valkyries, will play in 2025.
Many fans are not happy with the Tempo’s new team and moniker, despite the fact that they are proud of it.
The newest expansion franchise has been ridiculed by WNBA viewers on social media.
“Internal struggle trying to decide what s worse, the logo or name,” a supporter added.
