Beloved kids’ toy store set to close last location in state after 10 years – there’ll only be 7 left in the country
The final toy store in the Carolinas, a beloved one in Charlotte, is scheduled to close early next year.
Since 2014, American Girl has been a well-known fixture at South Park Mall. Young people frequent the immersive store for tea and parties, as well as to purchase dolls from its extensive assortment.
This Christmas will be the last time that North Carolina present buyers may buy toys from their neighborhood store, and it will also be the last time that kids can spend their holiday money in person on their favorite characters.
For their closest outlet, fans will need to drive to Nashville, Tennessee, or Washington, DC, after the store permanently closes in February of next year.
FINAL CHANCE
In 2014, the 12,000-square-foot Charlotte store debuted in the South Park Mall’s Macy’s wing.
On February 17 of the next year, it would close. On the American Girl website, there is a simple note that reads: Thank you, Charlotte. You will be missed by us!

GIRL POWER
There used to be American Doll stores all throughout the US, but this most recent closure has reduced that number to just seven.
The company was founded in 1986 by businesswoman Pleasant T. Rowlandin and is currently owned by Mattel.
The American Girls Collection, which featured historical dolls depicting girls from various eras of US history, was her debut commercial line.
Every figure in the collection also appears in a number of books that go into the various historical periods.
Using aspirational characters and historical dolls that represented those many periods of US history, Rowland’s goal was on fusing education and play.
In addition to selling toys, the first American Girl store debuted in Chicago in 1998 and offered young fans and their dolls salon services, events, and activities.
In that same year, Mattel acquired the business, and at one point, there were eighteen American Doll stores nationwide.
According to data on the American Girl website, the company has sold over 162 million books and 36 million dolls since its establishment in 1986.
