Trump and Vance vow to fight for ‘winner’ Pete Hegseth & fire back at claims Secretary of Defense nomination is ‘doomed’
In a scathing statement, Donald Trump and JD Vance said they would fight for Pete Hegseth when it was revealed that several Republican senators thought his candidacy as Defense Secretary was doomed.
This week, Hegseth has been on Capitol Hill, frantically trying to win over Republican senators.
To be confirmed as Defense Secretary, Hegseth must receive the backing of 50 senators.
Hegseth can only lose three Republican votes if all Democrats reject his nomination because the GOP will have a 53-47 lead in the Senate for the 119th Congress.
According to The Hill, up to eight Republican senators could vote against Hegseth.
Hegseth’s nomination was going in the wrong direction, according to one.
However, Trump and JD Vance, the vice president-elect, have publicly endorsed Hegseth.
Trump wrote on Truth Social today that Pete Hegseth is doing great.
He had a military mindset and was a stellar student who attended Princeton and Harvard.
He will be an amazing, dynamic Secretary of Defense who is a skilled and charismatic leader.There is nothing that can change the fact that Pete is a winner!
According to Vance, who shared Trump’s tweet on Xand, Hegseth will defend American soldiers.
Trump’s Truth Post prompted Hegseth to respond, saying, “Like you, we will never back down.”
On the Capitol Hill, Hegseth has been meeting with senators.
He has met with leading Republican Tom Cotton, Wisconsin politician Ron Johnson, and Senator Katie Britt of Alabama.
The circulating accusations of wrongdoing have cast doubt on Hegseth’s nomination.
Britt said in an X statement that she had discussed the accusations with Hegseth and praised his “candor and transparency.”
Earlier this week, there were rumors that Trump might take Hegseth’s position in lieu of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
