Abbie Donehoo, a local who received one of the letters, told WHO Des Moines: I received a letter in the mail regarding parking on the sides of the road, which carries a $1,000 fine.

After looking at it, I assumed that it had the City of Des Moines stamp, but it was one of those strange-sounding things.

“I know you can fake anything these days, but seeing the City of Des Moines stamp on there really made it look real,” she continued.

She quickly discovered, though, that the letter lacked the proper contact details and had no additional information on the purported parking restrictions.

I simply tossed it aside. I simply assumed that if it was anything truly significant, they would often post it on the news and send it out by email as well, she added.

Many locals have acknowledged that they prepared their cars because they believed the letters to be authentic.

Zemansky has reassured homeowners, however, that there isn’t a seasonal parking prohibition in Des Moines; rather, snow-related parking restrictions are only implemented while snow is present and Public Works is plowing.
