Cracker Barrel boycott planned after store ‘refused to seat group of disabled students’ – but restaurant blames staffing
Management claims that employees are to fault for the CRACKER Barrel boycott, which began when the establishment refused to seat a group of students with disabilities.
Following the denial of service to schoolchildren, the restaurant chain issued an apology.
On December 3, students and educators from Maryland’s Charles County Public Schools were at the site in Waldorf, which is 23 miles southeast of Washington, DC.
The purpose of their journey was to assist impaired kids in practicing and applying classroom skills in real-world situations as part of a community-based instruction program (CBI).
Teachers, however, claim that when they got there, the waitresses mistreated them and refused to serve them inside.
They “unfortunately had a very bad experience” at the Cracker Barrel, according to an email shared on Facebook by parent Stacey Campbell from her son’s teacher, who also said that “servers and hosts were very rude” to the group members.

In a letter, Superintendent Maria Navarro stated that the district had provided advance notice of their intended visit, including the reason for the trip and the anticipated number of attendees, to the Cracker Barrel facility.
However, restaurant employees allegedly stated that reservations were not required in order to dine there.
Local NBC station WFLA reported that Navarro wrote, “Upon arrival, the students and staff were declined service and asked to no longer include the restaurant on its CBI list.”
“Our students and staff are our No. 1 priority, and we are disheartened to learn about the alleged treatment they received while participating in an activity designed to educate our students using real-world applications,” she said.
“What is the leadership going to do, and how are they going to ensure that their discriminatory practices are no longer happening?” Campbell, whose son has autism, told WDCW in an interview after criticizing the reported actions of Cracker Barrel employees.
In response to the event, Cracker Barrel blamed a personnel shortage.
In a statement, a corporate representative attributed the closing of a portion of a dining area to “confusion.”
To the teachers and children, they continued, they were offering their “apologies” and attempting to “make things right.”
Requests for response from The U.S. Sun were not immediately answered by Cracker Barrel.
However, irate parents and other community members claimed that the message falls short.
On December 15, a demonstration and restaurant boycott are scheduled.
CRACKER BARREL STATEMENT
A Cracker Barrel spokeswoman released the following statement in response to news that a group of instructors and disabled kids were turned away from the establishment in Waldorf, Maryland:
Due to a staffing issue that day, a portion of our second dining room had to be closed, which caused confusion and affected the group’s experience.
“We take this matter seriously and are working directly with the group s leadership to better understand what happened, extend our apologies, and make things right.”
