(FOX 2):Following the state’s $55 million settlement, workers have until mid-December to join a class action lawsuit against Michigan’s unemployment office.

The state incorrectly requested that workers refund the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency compensation before assessing whether their appeals were timely and properly filed, which is the basis for the pandemic-era case.

The government agency will not acknowledge liability, and any employees who sign on to the lawsuit will be required to release all claims against the department, according to the agreement that was previously reached between the UIA and the parties involved.

Joining the class action lawsuit must be done by email or by getting in touch with the settlement administrator by December 20.

What is Saunders v UIA?

A significant contributing factor to Michigan’s unemployment agency’s overabundance of claims from citizens seeking benefits after losing their jobs was the Covid health catastrophe that occurred in 2020.

The unemployment agency attempted to recover some of the money that it felt should not have been disbursed as issues arose and payments were made.

According to the lawsuit, those payments were wrongfully recovered by the UIA from individuals who had opposed and appealed the agency’s decision to reclaim benefits.

It will agree to pay $55 million to those who had their money recovered from the agency as part of a settlement with the agency, and it will not assert any liability in the matter.

How do I know if I’m part of the case?

Anyone who had money taken from them in spite of appealing the verdict is considered an affected party.

Other claims were not promptly processed before the UIA recovered funds, and several appeals were still pending at the time of the lawsuit.

Anyone with questions about whether they are involved in the lawsuit should call 1-866-499-4565.

Retrieving benefits

Affected parties must fill out a claim form in order to receive a portion of the settlement. It is able to locate the link to that.
