DETROIT (FOX 2):On the east side of Detroit, some people are a little warmer as winter approaches thanks to DTE’s Energy Efficiency Assistance Program.

Among those participating is Mose Primus. His high energy expenditures were killing him in other ways, and his furnace barely made it through the flood in 2021.

“I would have to turn my heat up to 90 to have a nice warm house,” Primus replied. “I can t get the medicine because I have to pay a bill.”

A furnace, hot water heater, and other items were given to Primus for free when they signed up for the DTE Energy Efficiency Assistance Program.

How the DTE Energy Efficiency Assistance Program works

According to DTE, the program is improving the efficiency of low-income applicants’ homes and altering their lives.

After confirming their eligibility (scroll down for those details), participants can get in touch with a participating organization. To determine what has to be done, a visit will be made. A licensed contractor will then be dispatched to install the upgraded equipment in accordance with the results of that visit.

According to Jose Goncalves, manager of the DTE Energy Efficiency Team, it is transforming lives.

“DTEs Energy Efficiency Program are state programs a mandated program that we utilize and utilize those funds to provide across all of our customers, both residential, small business, even large industrial customers with energy efficiency upgrades this year alone for our low income customers we provided over $63 million worth of benefits,” he stated.

The Heat And Warmth Fund informed DTE about Primus’ predicament. Grant funds are now being used for improvements for his neighbors in the Yorkshire Woods Community.

“As a result, residents (and) homeowners are getting furnaces, hot water, heater, air conditioners, windows, roof, in some cases,” Primus stated.
