(FOX 2):A snow band that unloaded and is still dumping flakes throughout Southeast Michigan has caused commuters to prepare ahead and anticipate their commute to work taking longer than usual.

On Thursday morning, the National Weather Service issued the first Winter Weather Advisory of the season for metro Detroit, placing Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, and Washtenaw Counties under a state of alert.

Additionally, more snow is predicted until mid-morning, with the majority of it falling on Thursday between 8 and 9 a.m.

Where is it snowing?

A system that passes down the I-96/I-696 corridor and portions of I-94 and I-75 is the main cause of the snow.

Communities around the county boundaries between Oakland and Macomb and Wayne will be the most affected.

During the most severe times, up to an inch of snow is predicted to fall each hour in certain places.

Metro Detroit is under a weather advisory.

Three to five inches of snow will fall on most locations.

Dozens of localities are experiencing school closures.

Cold temps and windy conditions

Additionally, the roads are becoming less visible, which emphasizes the need to drive slowly until the melting begins, which isn’t anticipated until this weekend.

On Thursday, high temperatures will reach about 21 degrees, and the wind chill will make it feel even worse.

The NWS reports that the wind gusts have topped 35 mph.

All of this adds up to slick roads, particularly on overpasses and bridges.

Slippery Roads

Those going into the workplace on Thursday may find it even more difficult to get about due to traffic congestion on several roadways.

Among them are:

  • Construction at Northbound I-75 between Sibley Road in southern Wayne County

  • Slow driving at Westbound I-94 at M-39

  • A crash at I-96 at Telegraph that could create delays up to 30 minutes

  • I-75/I-696 interchange is seeing slow conditions all over

As travelers woke up to slick weather in Southeast Michigan, collisions were reported near Ford Street and Telegraph at I-96.
