Rochester nonprofit gifts vehicle to domestic violence survivor
She’s had a difficult time. She claims that rebuilding her life has been difficult, but she didn’t want to be seen on camera. It is therefore unreal to obtain a new set of wheels.
DETROIT (FOX 2):On Friday, a mother of two got the present of a lifetime: a car she can call her own. It assists her in creating a new life free from domestic abuse.
She claims that restoring her life has been difficult. It is therefore unreal to obtain a new set of wheels.
The mother remarked, “This is like a pinch me moment.” For someone like me, receiving something like this is like no one has ever done anything like this for me in my entire life, you know. I simply am very appreciative.”
The fact that this 2015 Chevy Equinox is all hers is unbelievable to this mother of two. I’m thankful because it will enable her to rebuild her life and live a life free from domestic abuse.
She claims that her seven years of marriage were characterized by abuse.
“I ve been in moments where I had seen my own life flash in front of my eyes,” she stated. “I had a gun pointed at me, one time in front of my 2-year-old child.”
She started her divorce proceedings three years ago. It was finalized in May.
“It feels like 50 pounds falling off your shoulders,” she stated.
She claims that although she felt liberated, she had to start over. Due to transportation issues, she had to discontinue her training to become a Detroit police officer.
She didn’t own a vehicle. She has been using Uber everywhere lately, and she frequently arrives late for appointments and work.
She later met JoJo Dries, though, who understands the value of owning an automobile.
“A vehicle is one of the largest ways that abusers will abuse you and control you because you can t get anywhere,” Dries stated.
The nonprofit Dries Survivors can flourish in their new lives with the support of On the Wings of Angels. She has survived. With the assistance of Rochester’s Chief Financial Credit Union, they were able to get the woman a car. They had one with only 39,000 miles on it that they weren’t using.
“It was in great condition,” Chief Financial Credit Union executive vice president Cheryl Boodram said. “Jojo had told me a story about a survivor leaving and not having a vehicle and really not having that freedom as a result of not having that vehicle.”
The woman broke Boodram’s heart. She too, was a survivor. So she called Dries and told her what was available. Friday, they gave it to her.
“I do want people out there who find themselves in similar situations to know that there is hope and there is amazing people,” said the mother. “There are angels on this earth.”
The woman is so grateful. She says she’ll be able to be more active in her kids’ lives and resume training to become an officer.
