Temple Bar in Detroit is back open after collapsing in the spring

DETROIT (FOX 2):The iconic Temple Bar in Detroit partially collapsed months ago. The bar will now reopen in time for the holidays.

The proprietor of the Temple Bar will always remember that day.

George Boukas, the owner, claimed, “I thought it was a prank phone call,” “The entire facade had collapsed at 10:00 in the morning.”

Following that Detroit Police call, the owner of Temple Bar would soon find out that his famous dive bar had fallen. The doors have been shuttered since that Memorial Day weekend. The events that this pub is known for were crushed by that tragic moment.

“That was our movement opening party that night,” he stated.

Additionally, it destroyed the feeling of security and safety that many Temple Bar patrons have.

“I bought the bar with the intention of making it a secure place for everyone. “I wanted a place where all my friends, you know, black, white, gay, straight, I don’t care,” he added. “The city was completely different back in 1988, very segregated, and very homophobic.”

George admits to FOX 2 that he wasn’t always certain he would reopen, but he advises perseverance and never giving up if the battle seems too great.

“Number of times I was this close to giving up?” inquired he.

“What kept you fighting?” Ingrid Kelley of FOX 2 inquired.

“My customers,” was his reply.

Now the bar is operating again. According to George, customers shouldn’t worry because the Temple Bar is secure.

Leana Bradley, a customer, stated, “This place became my second home and now that it’s back open I’m super excited.”

“We actually had to hire a structural engineer when this all happened to make sure the building was structurally sound,” Boukas explained.

George’s only goal now is to embrace the community’s return.
