A major US city’s parking laws are about to change, which may result in more drivers getting fined.
The police department in Washington, Iowa, is going to take individuals who violate local parking restrictions more seriously. Instead of issuing tickets in response to complaints, officers will instead actively seek out violators.
Police on patrol routes around the city will spend the next few weeks issuing written warnings to vehicles that are found to be in violation of frequently broken parking ordinances, according to Southeast Iowa Union.
“We just felt that, you know, maybe it’s time we spend a little more time addressing these issues while we’re on patrol,” stated Jim Lester, the chief of police for the city.

Currently, vehicles that violate the rules will receive written warnings that are similar to slap-on-the-wrist.
However, efforts will start to impose fines by the beginning of 2025. The typical citywide punishment is $25, and during snow emergencies, it can go to $50.
“I’m hoping that we’ll see a change in the behavior, that’s what we’re looking for,” Lester continued. “It’s a matter of education.”

Lester said the adjustment is a result of an increase in parking complaints in the town.
Along with a few adjustments to Washington’s street parking ordinances in recent months, the police department recently issued a news statement stating that city authorities were becoming increasingly concerned about unauthorized parking as a safety risk.
Members of the Washington City Council amended the list of accessible parking spaces throughout the city earlier this year and approved a number of new no-parking zones.
More recently, advocates have called for stricter enforcement of rules banning trailers parked in front lawns, and pushing equipment into the street that violates other sections of the code.
Lester stated in a press statement that officers receive multiple reports per week regarding cars left in no-parking zones or cars kept on city roadways for more than twenty-four hours.
It was determined to dedicate some time this fall to residential neighborhoods, focusing on the various parking infractions, in light of recent ordinance amendments and the approaching winter snow shoveling season.
This occurs as a homeowner gets furious after discovering a car that was parked illegally and had received more than $22,000 in parking fines.
