Michigan House adjourns until Dec. 31 as rancor among Democrats spills over

As at least one House Democrat joined Republicans in boycotting the last days of lawmaking, the Michigan legislature’s lame duck session was filled with twists and turns.

(FOX 2):After a tumultuous last day in Lansing, where Democrats attempted to bring enough members into the chamber to vote on further measures, the Michigan House has adjourned until December 31.

Ultimately, a quorum was not reached, and Speaker Joe Tate adjourned the meeting.

The organization’s chairman, Detroit Democrat Joe Tate, acknowledged Ypsilanti Representative Jimmie Wilson.

“The House will stand adjourned until Tuesday, Dec. 31 at 1:30 p.m.,” Wilson stated.

Tate had issued a Call of the House Order one hour prior to the gaveling, directing sergeants to bring members back to the chamber.

As the last days of the Democratic Party’s governing majority draw to a close, it’s a dramatic end to a week of anxiety among Democrats. Next year, Republicans will take over the Michigan House.

It was uncertain for a large portion of Thursday morning if Democrats could gather enough members of their party to fill the chamber. For a session to start, all of the lawmakers would have to be present in the chamber.

But amid tensions that Democrats were neglecting issues, members such as Rep. Karen Whitsett of Detroit had rejected calls to return to Lansing.
