Fury as Christmas charity tractor runs axed over cop concerns
Following police elf and safety warnings, charity tractor drives for Christmas have been discontinued.
Devon’s Kenn Valley Young Farmers Club canceled their yearly ride on Sunday, citing police crackdowns as the reason.
For charity, farmers decorate their cars with Christmas lights and drive them through nearby villages.
“This event has raised thousands for charity, but we have been strongly advised not to proceed due to police and highways legislation,” they stated.
There are a lot of risks associated with this occurrence, but there have always been ways to mitigate them.
But after an hour-long team meeting to analyze the event, the police are cracking down on safety, and they are not happy about it.
For identical reasons, the River Dart Rotary Club, which plans another tractor run, also had to cancel.
“This is a cop out by the police,” said Victoria Atkins, the shadow environment secretary.
After Labour’s retaliatory Budget, people can generate money for charities and inject some much-needed festive spirit into our rural communities by managing risks, even though health and safety requirements must be adhered to.
According to Mo Metcalf-Fisher of the Countryside Alliance, This Scrooge-style crackdown on Christmas tractor runs is another setback for agricultural communities at a time when they need our full support, following the slap in the face that the Treasury gave them with the family farm tax.
According to a police spokesperson, Devon and Cornwall Police take public safety very seriously and have an obligation to advise the public about specific health and safety issues when planning any kind of public gathering.
Through the Safety Advisory Group, police and partners have provided guidance on how events can be conducted legally and safely to protect attendees and the general public while minimizing traffic interruption to other road users.
