Jimmy Johnson shares coaching career advice with new Norfolk State boss Michael Vick live on Fox NFL Sunday

Michael Vick, the new head coach of college football, is receiving instruction from Jimmy Johnson.

Jimmy Johnson offered Vick a brief coaching lesson on live television as he continues his Fox NFL Sunday duties after joining Norfolk State.

Prior to joining the NFL, Johnson spent time as a college coach at Miami and Oklahoma, giving him a wealth of knowledge.

In 1987, he and Miami won the national championship.

Johnson offered some insights for Vick’s future coaching career based on that experience.

“First of all, congratulations,” Johnson opened his mouth.

“First, college football is recruiting, and professional football is coaching. The secret is that.

“Since there will be numerous changes with your team, the second piece of advice is to keep things simple. Don’t complicate things.

“Success is who makes the fewest mistakes, not who makes the most great plays.”

Johnson gave Vick his first whistle to use as head coach of Norfolk State after offering him some wise counsel.

On Friday, Vick was formally named the new head coach.

Vick said Fox Sports, “I understand the position that Norfolk State is in,”

“I recognize where we are. Many children will be searching for football-playing possibilities where they may continue to develop while playing at a high level.

Working with children every single day, as opposed to, say, a two-day football camp, is what I’m looking forward to.

“Instead of watching them grow over two days, now I get to coach them each and every day with a great coaching staff who’s going to assist in making sure that these kids play their best brand of football.”

Vick revealed that after accepting the position, he asked Deion Sanders for advise.

“I reached out to Deion just to have a conversation with him,” Vick stated.

“The main topics of discussion were philosophy and the most crucial first steps.

Vick first had discussions with Sacramento State about their open head coaching position, but he didn’t want to base his decision just on cost.

“The circumstances at Sacramento State were excellent. They had a ton of opportunities and a ton of NIL money,” Vick remarked.

However, I didn’t want money to be the deciding factor in my choice. I wanted to base it on my abilities and the people I could actually assist.

Additionally, I believe that I can assist on both sides. However, I thought it was fantastic to return home and do it in my backyard.

“And that was probably the deciding factor, having the chance to do it back where I grew up.”
