Biden spares 37 inmates from death row including child killers in latest act of clemency days before Christmas
Just weeks before he leaves office, President Joe Biden will commute the sentences of 37 death row convicts, including those who killed children.
Only a few weeks have passed since the departing commander-in-chief performed the largest single-day act of clemency, commuting 1,500 sentences and pardoning 39 others.
With the commutations, there are now just three death row inmates left, and Biden has pledged to abolish the death penalty.
Thomas Sanders, who abducted and shot 12-year-old Lexis Roberts four times before slitting her throat, is among the individuals whose sentences were commuted.
Additionally, Jorge Avila-Torrez was found guilty in 2005 of killing two females by stabbing them and sexually abusing them.
Krystal Tobias, age nine, and Laura Hobbs, age eight, were identified as the victims.
The sentence for Anthony Battle was reduced. In 1994, while incarcerated for raping and killing his Marine wife, he killed a prison guard in Atlanta.
Biden said in a statement that he is more certain than ever that the death penalty should be abolished in the US.
“I can’t stand by and allow a new administration to carry on with the executions that I stopped,” he stated.
This is a narrative in progress.
