Snow forecast: Will Southeast Michigan have a white Christmas?

Will there be snowfall on Monday, ensuring a white Christmas for Metro Detroit? What to expect is explained by Derek Kevra.

DETROIT (FOX 2):Temperatures will rise above freezing as Christmas Day approaches, and there won’t be any precipitation. Would a white Christmas still be possible, though?

Derek Kevra analyzes the likelihood:

Monday snow forecast

Last Friday’s light snowfall and the weekend’s frigid temperatures prevented the snow from melting. Snow is already covering grassy surfaces in the majority of places, and more is predicted to fall throughout the course of the following day.

Between noon and five o’clock on Monday, a combination of freezing rain and sleet is expected to hit southeast Michigan. This will probably turn into snow by suppertime, adding roughly 0.5 to 1 inch south of Livingston, Oakland, and Macomb counties.

Associated

In certain parts of Metro Detroit, there will be a combination of freezing rain and sleet in addition to snow. Here’s what to anticipate and when:

Snow will fall at heavier rates and persist longer farther north in Macomb and northern Oakland counties, producing 1 to 3 inches. 2 to 5 inches might fall in places north of Flint.

Will it be a white Christmas?

Temperatures will dip to about 32 degrees over night, just below the melting and freezing points.

The weather on Christmas Eve will be dry, with afternoon highs of 37 degrees. We ll likely see about 12 hours of above-freezing temperatures, raising the question: will the snow on the ground melt in time for Christmas morning?

It will be quite near. We ll probably have some patches of snow left on the grass, but it s unlikely to meet the National Weather Service s definition of a white Christmas (1 inch or more of snow).

So, while some snow may linger, it won t quite be the classic white Christmas many are hoping for.
