Metro Detroit school district closed due to threat, police say

(FOX 2) River Rouge, Mich.As students were getting ready to leave for home on Monday, a high school threat forced the closure of a Metro Detroit school system.
Classes at River Rouge High School were coming to an end in the afternoon when the threat was made.
River Rouge made certain to involve the authorities as soon as the district learned about it. Things will remain closed out of prudence even if police think they have identified that pupil.
River Rouge Police Director Sotirios Arapakis stated, “At this time the community is not in danger, it’s an active investigation, and again we’re seeking charges against the individual that made this threat.”
Although River Rouge police were unable to provide specifics regarding the threat, they did state that safety is of utmost importance and that the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department is helping.
“We want to ensure the safety of the professors, students, and community. Therefore, any threat is treated extremely seriously,” Arapakis stated.
The district promptly sent out a letter to parents requesting that they discuss with their kids the seriousness of threatening behavior.
The letter says in part:
Because of what is occurring in schools around the nation, we have notified the Wayne County Prosecutors Office and River Rouge Police that we believe these are acts of terrorism that have the potential to harm people’s mental health. We sincerely regret any difficulty that the school closure may have caused, and please be aware that in order to ensure that pupils are safe and that business continues as usual, we will be implementing additional safety measures.”
According to the district, expulsion and other disciplinary measures will be implemented.
