Robert Saleh tipped to make shock NFL return as head coach of New York Jets bitter rivals

Robert Saleh, a former NFL head coach, might unexpectedly return to the field.

Saleh, who was let go by the New York Jets in October of last year, might return to coaching and take a position with a rival team.

The Jacksonville Jaguars revealed on Tuesday that they have asked Saleh to interview for their head coaching position.

Surprisingly, Jacksonville decided to keep general manager Trent Baalke after firing Doug Pederson on Black Monday following a dismal 3-14 season and missing the 2023 playoffs.

Along with Aaron Glenn, the team’s defensive coordinator, and Ben Johnson, the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, Saleh is one of eight applicants on the team’s wish list.

Currently serving as a consultant with the Green Bay Packers, the former Jets coach will help them get ready for their postseason run, which begins on Sunday against the No. 2 seed Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round.

Before being let go following a 2-3 start this season, Saleh has a 20-36 record with the Jets.

After he was fired, the Jets’ defense continued to perform poorly without him, and they disappointed on the field.

Under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich, they lost all but three of their previous 12 games, and their offensive ended the season at No. 24 in both yardage and points.

Saleh spent four seasons as defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers before joining the Jets in 2021.

He assisted in leading San Francisco’s defense to a Super Bowl berth during his time there.

Saleh previously served as a linebackers coach for the Jaguars from 2014 to 2016.

After playing for the Seattle Seahawks and Houston Texans, it was his third NFL position.

It should come as no surprise that Saleh is a popular coordinator name this offseason if the Jaguars decide not to hire him.

Saleh serves as head coach Matt LaFleur’s offensive consultant and plays a part-time job with Green Bay.

“It’s a good opportunity for him to learn and also for him to help us, give us perspective on how teams might see us, on how they might defend us,” LaFleur stated when Saleh was hired as a coach.

“It’s definitely possible to identify weaknesses or gaps in our protection.

“That’s how we’re gonna use him.”

This is the first time Saleh has served as an offensive assistant.

Other candidates for Jacksonville include defensive coordinator Patrick Graham of the Las Vegas Raiders and offensive coordinators Joe Brady (Buffalo Bills), Todd Monken (Baltimore Ravens), Liam Coen (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), and Kellen Moore (Eagles).
