UK Athletics & head of sport charged with manslaughter after Paralympian died when metal throwing cage fell on him

A Paralympian died after a metal throwing cage fell on him, and UK Athletics Limited and the organization’s previous head of sport have been charged with manslaughter.

In July 2017, Abdullah Hayayei was slain at the Newham Leisure Centre as he was training.

UK Athletics Ltd. has been charged with corporate manslaughter and a Health and Safety at Work Act offense, according to the Crown Prosecution Service.

Keith Davies, 77, their former head of sport, has been charged with a health and safety offense as well as gross negligence manslaughter.

Hayayei, a 36-year-old athlete from the United Arab Emirates, was killed in the incident after being hit by a metal pole.

He was training for the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London when the tragedy occurred.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that criminal proceedings are ongoing and that both UK Athletics Ltd and Davies have the right to a fair trial,” stated Malcolm McHaffie, head of the CPS Special Crime Division.

“It is extremely important that there be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.”
