Earthquake rattles California as state battles two emergencies at once with deadly fires raging in Los Angeles
While California is already dealing with destructive wildfires that have burned over 10,000 homes and other buildings and claimed 10 lives, the state has also experienced an earthquake.
After a 3.7-magnitude earthquake shook San Francisco on Friday morning, the state is currently dealing with two catastrophes at once.
Around seven in the morning PT, the earthquake was discovered five miles southwest of the Golden Gate Bridge.
The San Francisco Fire Department says no damage or injuries have been reported.
“I ordered city government into action immediately this morning, and our first responders have been out across the city ensuring the safety of our residents.”
A US Geological Survey map suggested that the San Andreas Fault was the source of the earthquake.

It follows a magnitude 7 earthquake that shook the Bay Area last month and prompted evacuations and tsunami warnings.
Tens of thousands of Los Angeles residents have been forced to evacuate due to several fires, and Californians are currently doing the same 400 miles down the coast.
It appears like…
-
Ten people
have died as uncontrolled wildfires engulf Los Angeles
- More than 180,000 residents have been forced to flee their homes as over 10,000 structures are destroyed
-
An ‘
arsonist armed with a blowtorch
‘ was arrested
- The Kenneth Fire is the latest fire to threaten the city after sparking Thursday night
- Firefighters are “maxed out” and reportedly running out of water
-
Terrified
families screamed
and ‘ran for their lives’
- Celebrity homes have been torched, including A-listers like Paris Hilton, Billy Crystal, and Anthony Hopkins
“A massive fire and an earthquake hitting California in a week s time?” An X user wrote.
“Enough now! Another said, “Thank you very much. The West Coast doesn’t need San Andreas to start acting up now.”
“Fires, earthquake what next for California…locusts and frogs?” A third was shared.
Over 180,000 individuals were forced to evacuate as firefighters battled to contain the wind-controlled fires in Los Angeles.
In an effort to find victims of the most destructive fire in the city’s history, firefighters and cadaver dogs are sifting through the burned rubble.
Robert Luna, the Los Angeles County Sheriff, stated that some parts of the city “look like a bomb was dropped in them.”
Additionally, a horrifying error resulted in emergency warnings ringing on the phones of all 10 million people living in Los Angeles.
All residents of the city received the notification, which read, “An EVACUATION WARNING has been issued in your area,” by mistake.
Residents have criticized Mayor Karen Bass and demanded an apology for her disregard for fire safety regulations.
What causes earthquakes?
Here’s all the information you require…
- An earthquake is a shockwave caused by rocks being under extreme forces
- They are typically triggered by the movement of Earth s crust
- Earth s tectonic plates, the massive shelves of crust that carry the continents and seafloor, meet at points called fault lines
- When these plates rub over or against one another, huge amounts of pressure are generated
- This creates shockwaves that send violent vibrations through Earth
- The shock can split the planet s crust and create devestating tsunamis
Both President-elect Donald Trump and his constituents have harshly criticized Governor Gavin Newsom.
On Wednesday, Trump accused Newsom of obstructing a water runoff law and demanded his resignation.
Newsom was more concerned with preserving “worthless fish” than his own citizens, according to the president-elect.
“The ultimate cost is now being borne. I’m going to insist that this inept governor let gorgeous, pure, and fresh water flow into California. Trump posted on Truth Social.
