What they’re saying:

According to MDOT, eastbound I-696 between Lahser and I-75 will be closed for two years until repairs are made. The work is a component of the freeway’s $275 million reconstruction project.

This section of the project is anticipated to be the final stretch of the roadway to be completed between I-75 and the area where construction recently concluded.

According to MDOT authorities, the road is in poor condition.

The backstory

In 2022, they declared their intention to build a route from Evergreen to I-275 via I-696.

All of this was a part of the upgrade project for I-75, which began back in 2016.

According to MDOT, the state highways and bridges were rebuilt thanks to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan initiative.

Highlighted

After years of construction in western Oakland County, I-696 is fully open in both directions once more.

Next steps:

Although westbound I-696 will remain open, vehicles who must go east will be rerouted to take M1 Northwestern south, the Lodge to the Davison M8, and then I-75 north to avoid the closure.
