FOX 2: YPSILANTI, Mich.Residents of a dilapidated apartment building in Ypsilanti claim they are torn between getting evicted from their homes and a lousy landlord.

According to Reica McGuire, she has been living in appalling conditions in the Arbor One apartment complex in Ypsilanti for the past year and a half. She pointed to a broken toilet and said, “Supervisor Bob told me he was going to send a plumber over here to fix this,”

She still pays her rent of $1098 each month even though it never happened.

Look more closely:

Fox 2: “Why is it so hot in here?”

“Because I had to turn the stove on to stay warm,” she replied. “I don t have any heat.”

How long?

“About three or four months,” stated McGuire.

Similar problems exist at Edwina Harris’ apartment in the same Arbor One building. She said, “There’s a big hole in the wall and this comes straight off,” as the water levers on her bathtub came loose.

The dishwasher wasn’t draining properly, so she opened it next.

“You see all the damn standing water in there,” responded Harris. “It sucks.”

The Ypsilanti building inspector has placed a yellow tag on a few of the apartments, indicating that the owner lacks a current certificate of conformity.

According to Annie Sommerville, “there are a lot of problems,”

Washtenaw County representatives showed out outside the property on Monday in a bus to teach renters how to file a lawsuit against the landlord.

In the winter, “your heat should hold (at) 68 and that if you have sewage back up, that’s also not okay,” Watenaw County Commissioner Somerville stated.

The opposing viewpoint:

FOX 2 attempted to reach the owner or property management for comment.

“I’m not going to make any comment for the ownership,” employee said.

Fox 2: “Can I talk to the ownership?”

The office door was shut at that moment.

Next steps:

Although there is a process for tenants to follow, several residents have been taken to court for failing to pay their rent.

“They tell us we have to put it into an escrow account and leave it in escrow, and then you start getting eviction notices and stuff like that,” Dean Hellerud, a resident, said.

Fox 2: “That is the law, isn’t it?”

“That is the law.”

Regretfully, locals like McGuire claim she has little choices.

“Why do you stay?” FOX 2.

“Because I have nowhere else to go right away,” she replied.
