Jerry Jones sends clear message on what he expects from Dallas Cowboys in 2025 NFL season

Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys, talked candidly about his team’s prospects for the next campaign.

The most recent statement from the Dallas Cowboys’ owner and general manager was made at the team’s press conference to introduce new head coach Brian Shottenheimer.

Following a 7-10 season in 2024 that prevented them from qualifying for the playoffs, the Cowboys cut ties with McCarthy.

Shottenheimer, who has been with Dallas since 2022 but has no prior head coaching experience, was a surprise hire last week.

When under pressure to admit that other coaches have shown interest in the team’s opening, Jerry Jones said as much on Monday.

The 82-year-old added that the coaches were interested in the job because they believe the Cowboys have a chance to win a Super Bowl.

Jones kept the coaches who contacted Dallas a secret.

Despite finishing 12-5 in 2023, the Cowboys were eliminated from the playoffs.

Since 1996, the last time the organization won the Super Bowl, they have not advanced to the NFCC Championship Game.

The assumption that the team is unquestionably in a Super Bowl drought was refuted when Jones’s son, Stephen, was named executive vice president of player personnel and co-owner of the team.

“Obviously we’re also evaluating where it didn’t go right in terms of… this drought that… (air quotes)…. people say we’re in… in terms of aChampionshipGame or a Super Bowl,” he stated.

Jerry, his father, was care to respond to those who criticize him for staying in his “comfort zone” and for not wanting to share the limelight with a well-known head coach.

“Now I get my proverbial a** kicked over needing people in my comfort zone,” Jones said at the start of his tirade.

“Without this thing being about me in any way… if you don’t think I can’t operate outside my comfort zone, you’re so wrong it’s unbelievable.”

Jones went on to acknowledge that employing Schottenheimer “is as big a risk as you can take” due to his inexperience as head coach.

“How often do you have someone that has 25 years of working through the human relationship and aspiring to learn – having his ears and eyes wide open – looking for techniques and looking for things that make coaches better?” he said.

The late NFL legend Marty Schottenheimer, who won 200 games as a head coach, is the father of Schottenheimer.

The 52-year-old has been an assistant for his entire career, working for people like McCarthy, Rex Ryan, and Pete Carroll.

Since 2023, Schottenheimer has served as the offensive coordinator for the Cowboys.

Dallas is coming off a poor season in which Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury halfway through the season. In his first season leading the offense, Dallas finished in the top five.
