Traffic Delays as Protesters Rally for Palestine on Northwest Side Roads
SAN ANTONIO: Early on Monday morning, two roadways on the Northwest Side of the city were partially blocked off by a protest in favor of Palestine.
The protest took place close to Loop 1604, at 1 Valero Way, the location of Valero’s headquarters.
On both sides of Valero’s campus, protesters had set up camp. The Loop 1604 access road was closed, as was the intersection of Valero Way and UTSA Boulevard.
“They gathered to blockade the Valero headquarters to take a stand against the global economy’s complicity in the ongoing genocide in Palestine,” according to a press statement from the demonstrators. The press announcement added that Valero provides the Israeli military with fuel of the highest caliber.
Monday was chosen as the protest date because it was the IRS deadline for filing federal income taxes. The purpose, according to the protestors, was to draw attention to the US government’s “responsibility” for arming Israel against Palestine.

On Monday, we also commemorate the anniversary of the Women’s March, which took place on April 15, 1933. The purpose of the march was to show the solidarity of Palestinian women against British colonialism and its role in advancing Jewish settlement in Palestine.
The protest was one of several taking place around the country, such as the one that blocked the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and the one that blocked a freeway that led to three terminals of Chicago O’Hare International Airport, temporarily blocking car traffic and creating headaches for travelers at one of the busiest airports in the country.
