Douglas County Sheriff’s Patrol Car Rammed in Chase; Suspect Faces Numerous Charges

MYRTLE CREEK, Ore – According to the Myrtle Creek Police Department, a 38-year-old Corvallis man was arrested on various charges Tuesday afternoon in Myrtle Creek after reportedly ramming a Douglas County sheriff’s patrol vehicle after a police pursuit.

According to MCPD officials, soon after 4 p.m. on April 30, an officer observed a 2009 Dodge truck driving on Division Street without license plates. When the officer attempted to begin a traffic stop on North Myrtle Road, the vehicle’s driver, Bobby R. Helms, fled and participated in a lengthy pursuit, police said.

According to the probable cause affidavit, Helms slowed slightly as if to pull over before aggressively accelerating northward on North Myrtle Road at speeds ranging from 50 to 74 mph. According to the affidavit, Helms allegedly drifted into the oncoming lane several times, including once on a blind turn. According to the police report, during the chase, Helms smashed through and destroyed a metal motorized gate on a property on Opossum Lane.

According to authorities, the pursuit terminated on Opossum Lane when Helms allegedly slammed a patrol vehicle from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. According to MCPD officials, Helms had multiple arrest warrants. According to the police report, a weapon was later found stashed inside the truck.

Helms was transported to the Douglas County Jail on charges of elude by vehicle, reckless driving, reckless endangering, failure to perform driver duties, unlawful possession of a concealed weapon, felon in possession of a weapon, criminal mischief, trespass, and misdemeanor driving while suspended, as well as outstanding warrants. According to jail records, Helms remains in custody as of May 2, 2024.

After the pursuit concluded, MCPD officers found and arrested Micki Rae Englent, 40, of Corvallis, in the parking lot of a Chevron gas station. Englent, who was traveling with Helms, was detained on felony warrants issued in Benton County, according to police. According to authorities, she was lodged in the Douglas County Jail, and jail records show that she was released on May 2, 2024.
