“New Taxation Agenda!” Where Do Massachusetts Lawmakers Stand?
BOSTON – On Beacon Hill, concerns about overall income deficits and economic instability persist despite an April revenue haul that is above projections. Does House Speaker Ron Mariano have any thoughts about new taxes?
Mariano interviewed with WBZ-TV a week after Sen. President Karen Spilka stated that she was not considering new taxes at this time.
Mariano stated, “I’m not even using a radar screen.” “The current state of affairs is what I have. We recently enacted a significant tax cut—possibly the largest one in the last 20 years—with the goal of boosting our competitiveness.
Thus, that must come to pass. that individuals are being kept in the state, that college graduates are staying there.”
Could Rates Of Massachusetts’s Commercial Taxes Be Increased?
Though Boston Mayor Michelle Wu had petitioned for legislative approval to potentially boost business tax rates in order to address projected shortfalls resulting from the decline of commercial real estate values, Mariano did not appear to be persuaded.
It’s telling, in my opinion, that she hasn’t had a vote on her petition in the City Council. You would think that this. Would already be being implemented if it was that fantastic. I don’t believe that anyone is really eager to discuss more income at this time,” Mariano remarked.
Does that include the idea that Governor Maura Haley made public back in January to allow cities and towns to impose local option taxes on lodging, dining, and automobile purchases?
Mariano remarked, “I don’t like any of these.” “We’ll go talk to the people who presented them, but I have a healthy skepticism on how valuable they are.”
Reaction to the Issue Involving Steward Health
In reaction to the Steward Hospital scandal, in which it is claimed that mismanagement has left important corporate officials wealthy while driving many nearby hospitals to the verge of closure, Mariano also provided a sneak peek at significant healthcare legislation he is planning to introduce.
“We’re going to try and make sure that we close all the loopholes that Steward was able to take advantage of,” Mariano adds. “We will not permit a hospital, for example, to sell off its assets from beneath the structure.
Additionally, we’re going to check the books of businesses who plan to conduct business and tighten up on transparency.”
