Close Call! No Injuries As Brooklyn Roof Partially Collapses, Metal Falls Onto Cars And Scaffolding

DEBARYLIFE – Metal crashed onto cars and scaffolding below after a partial roof fall in Williamsburg. It occurred on Sunday in Williamsburg on 143 Roebling Street between Metropolitan and Hope, shortly after 4:30 p.m.

According to the FDNY, a section of the roof fell onto the sidewalk shed. As it resembled a glacier, some of it fell. Witness Colm Dillane stated, “Then a little bit— then a little bit more.”

Not a single injury was reported.

The roof’s parapet, which lines the edge and keeps people safe from falling off, lost way in this instance and turned into a dangerous area.

Before hitting hard on the sidewalk shed below, a rain of bricks struck the fire escape, causing the scaffolding to collapse beneath the weight.

“The fire escape has a lot of junk on it. “There is a fear that the debris on the fire escape could pull down the wall and the fire escape,” FDNY Assistant Chief Mike Meyers stated.
Along with medical personnel and building specialists, about 100 firefighters responded in what they refer to as a “major collapse matrix.” There was nobody under the rubble field or inside the empty building.

Documents reveal a history of issues at the site. The sidewalk shed was ordered in response to the collapse of another portion of the parapet in July 2022.

The ancient building has not been fixed in the two years that have passed, according to officials.

Assistant Chief Meyers continued, “We said we want the street closed because we’ve already assessed there’s a chance of further collapse.”
