CHICAGO – First Lady Michelle Obama’s previous mother, Marian Robinson, a native of Chicago, passed away.

Born in 1937 in Chicago, Robinson spent her whole childhood living on the South Side. In 2009, she moved to Washington, D.C., to assist in caring for her granddaughters following President Barack Obama’s election.

Fraser Robinson, a fellow South Sider, was her husband until his passing in 1991. Family relatives said that Robinson, who was 86 years old, died quietly on Friday morning.

Obama expressed her grief in a statement to the public today and referred to Robinson as “her rock.” Obama’s remarks covered every aspect of Robinson’s Chicagoan life.

“As a young woman, she studied to become a teacher before working as a secretary,” the statement continued.

Michelle Obama declared on Mother’s Day that her mother would be honored by a new “Opening the White House” exhibit at the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago. Obama wrote extensively about her relationship with her mother on the center’s website.

“Growing up with my mom always was an adventure,” Obama stated. “As a toddler, it involved going to the library to learn the alphabet; the whole family would cram into our car and head to the neighborhood drive-in, carrying homemade chicken.

Among the things Mom did was invite her family over for New Year’s Eve and toast to the new year as midnight approached.”

“But above all, my mother showed me love in so many different ways—unconditional and unceasing. She taught me how to think for myself, advocate for myself, and see my own value, which helped me develop a strong feeling of confidence in who I was and who I could be.

“I simply wouldn’t be who I am today without her.”
