Weekend Bloodshed: 16 Shot, 1 Fatally, in Chicago Gun Violence Spree

CHICAGO – At least 16 people have been shot, one fatally, in gun violence around Chicago this weekend, according to police. A 41-year-old man was fatally shot on Friday in Auburn Gresham, on the South Side.

He was in the 8700 block of South Loomis Street at 7 p.m. when two gunmen approached him and opened fire, according to Chicago police.

According to authorities, the man died at the scene after being shot many times. There were no arrests reported.

Police said that hours later, a concealed-carry license holder shot three individuals outside his home in the city’s Belmont Cragin district.

Police said the incident occurred around 11:23 p.m. in the 4700 block of West Wrightwood Avenue. A verbal altercation escalated into an all-out battle, which resulted in guns fired.

The 43-year-old male victim was arguing with three males he knew when police say they attacked him.

“He’s my cousin, the one that they beat up,” Andres Salgado explained. “I don’t know the complete story, but my cousin is a diligent man who has two children. His wife teaches at public schools.

According to authorities, the victim pulled out a revolver and shot, hitting all three suspected attackers. The homeowner is a concealed-carry license holder.

“They attempted to enter my cousin’s house,” Salgado claimed.

According to authorities, a 29-year-old male suffered five gunshot wounds to the torso and was sent to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition. A 22-year-old guy was shot in the chest and sent to Illinois Masonic Hospital in critical condition. A 55-year-old guy was shot in the neck and is currently in critical condition at Illinois Masonic Hospital.

Police said the victim suffered blunt force wounds to the head and body and was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital in critical condition.

Police claimed the victim’s gun was discovered at the site.

“He’s a hardworking man who doesn’t deserve this,” Salgado explained.

Area Five investigators are still investigating the motive and circumstances surrounding the incident. Police have not given any information regarding probable criminal charges.

Police reported that minutes later, two males were shot and seriously injured in the University Village neighborhood.

Someone fired bullets at the men as they were on the street in the 1300 block of West 13th Street.

A 23-year-old male was shot four times in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital in severe condition.

Another male, aged 26, was also shot in the leg. He was transferred to the same hospital in good health.

Police claimed both victims declined to answer questions regarding the shooting. There is no one in custody, and Area Three detectives are investigating.

A guy was shot on Sunday while attempting to break into a residence on Chicago’s South Side, according to police.

Around 12:53 a.m., a shooting occurred in the 8100 block of Champlain Avenue in Chatham.

A 50-year-old guy was attempting to break into the house when he was shot by the homeowner, who has a concealed-carry license.

The suspect was sent to the hospital in critical condition after suffering a gunshot wound to the back. Detectives from the Chicago Police Department are conducting an investigation.

Over Memorial Day weekend, at least 41 individuals were shot in Chicago, nine of whom were killed, according to police.
