Arizona Law Enforcement to Receive Federal Funding Surge, Rep. Gallego and Mayor Orsborn Reveal

DEBARYLIFE – Mayor Eric Orsborn and Representative Ruben Gallego recently gave positive news to the local law enforcement community at a meeting held at Buckeye City Hall.

Gallego, a Democrat from Arizona, worked hard in Congress to win a sizable boost in government funds, which they cheered. Arizonans in a variety of locales, from the busy downtown to the peaceful countryside, should feel safer thanks to this additional budget.

“You should be able to feel comfortable at home, at work, and at school, regardless of where you live—in downtown Phoenix, a developing neighborhood like Buckeye, or a remote county. That is made possible by first responders, and we need to support them,” Gallego said. Gallego sees the increased cash as a “smart, targeted investment,” essential to ensuring the safety of the state’s citizens.

Thank you for the extra resources, Mayor Orsborn said. Federal assistance is crucial to keeping crime rates down and public safety in a city like Buckeye, which is growing quickly.

The new funding, approved in March, would go toward the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) programs and a $75 million increase for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS).

Rep. Gallego’s lengthy history of blue support is evidence of his dedication to police enforcement. He has cast votes for legislation totaling more than $168 billion, of which $2.2 billion is allocated to the COPS program alone. He said in May that addressing the shortage of law enforcement officers was still imperative.

The bipartisan Strong Communities Act was supported by Gallego to improve relations between police personnel and the communities they assist. Furthermore, during National Police Week 2023, Representative Gallego backed the Invest to Protect Act, which intends to provide training and mental health resources to local law enforcement agencies.

Encouraging small to mid-sized agencies, especially those that serve tribal people, is a top priority for this law.

Also aimed at bolstering law enforcement and improving safety in Indian Country, Gallego sponsored the BADGES for Native Communities Act earlier this year.
