Authorities: Arlington Home Explosion Result of Intentional Act by Homeowner, What Is The Reason?

Arlington, Virginia –

Investigators studying the origin of a big explosion that devastated an Arlington duplex in December 2023 concluded that the homeowner who perished in the blast did so on purpose.

In a report released on Friday, representatives from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives joined the Arlington County police and fire departments to share the results of their investigations.

The situation, starting with the first officer’s arrival at the scene, was described in detail in the briefing. Body-worn camera footage from the explosion and the 56-year-old suspect James Yoo shooting flares out of his window were also made public by the results.

According to officials, the explosion started in the home’s basement and contained gasoline and a “competent ignition source.” They also stated that the police-used ammunition during the incident was confirmed not to be a competent ignition source.

Findings from the scene revealed the following: gasoline canisters, two shotguns, a gun, two flare guns, shotgun magazines, loose shotgun rounds, and flares that had been fired and unfired.

You died from “thermal injuries and blunt force trauma,” according to the report.

Yoo had been acting strangely in the months before the incident, according to neighbors. Before the explosion, he is said to have covered his windows with black rubbish bags and placed massive orders for charcoal and bleach. He tossed rubbish, including empty bleach bottles, onto his yard the morning of the incident.

He started shooting flares out of his duplex’s rear window later that day, and one of them landed close to an elementary school. While conducting their investigation, police tried unsuccessfully to speak with Yoo over the phone and in person.

With an armored car, police broke through his home door after obtaining a search order. From inside the residence, Yoo allegedly fired several rounds as the police arrived at the door.

About ninety minutes before the explosion, the authorities said they had shut off the gas supply to the house and evacuated the occupants in the vicinity.
