A gobstopper sweet snapped my jaw in TWO places after I bit into the rock hard confectionery leaving me in hospital

After consuming a famous children’s treat, a teenager’s jaw broke in two places, necessitating excruciating surgery and a liquid diet.

When Javeria Wasim and her companion went shopping in Toronto last month, they purchased two jaw-dropping candies, as they are appropriately called.

Wasim, 19, made the decision to try and bite through the three-inch-diameter ball in order to reach the center when the two returned to their university dorm room.

Usually, you have to keep sucking gobstoppers until you get to the gumball candy in the center.

Wasim, however, never made it that far before experiencing an abrupt ache in her jaw and realizing that one of her teeth was loose and the other had been chipped.

The university student soon learned why the candies are called Jawbreaker.

Wasim was informed that she suffered two fractures in her jaw after being brought to the hospital for an X-ray and CT scan.

In order for people to follow along, she has since shared her experience and recovery process on social media, both on TikTok (@javdrives) and Instagram (@javeriawasiim).

Wasim has described how the physicians told her that her tooth was “wiggly” because it was on top of the bone that had broken apart, and she was “shocked” by the harm the sweet had caused.

The teen’s mouth was wired shut while it healed since she could hardly open it.

“It hurt really bad, I was crying a lot when the ambulance came and everything was blurry,” she recalled.

“They informed me that I needed to have my jaw wired shut since it was broken.

“I was shocked, I thought my biggest problem was my broken tooth.”

The day following the event, Wasim had an hour-long surgery to re-set her jaw and place a bar into her top and bottom gums.

“I can’t explain why I was in so much pain during the first week following surgery. The teenager remarked, “I would just take painkillers and lay in bed.”

“I’d sleep because the only time I wasn’t in pain was when I was sleeping.”

Wasim was on a liquid-only diet for the six weeks that he was recovering.

“I can’t eat anything, all I’m having are protein shakes and soups, I’ve lost seven pounds in two weeks,” she stated.

“I haven’t eaten in forty-two days. I eat soup, but you never seem satisfied.

“I took the sensation of being full for granted, and all I can think about is how hungry I am. I really miss eating.

“I’m constantly annoyed as well…You use your mouth for practically everything in your life, and you realize how crucial it is. It has had a huge impact on my life,” she continued.

According to the business student, the incident has left her “traumatized” and she would “probably never try a jawbreaker again.”

Upon purchasing the candies, she and her companion intended to get “the biggest size they had.”

“I said we have to break it because people lick their way through it and it takes them months to get through it all,” Wasim remarked.

“It was such a dumb thing; people break their jaws in fights and auto accidents, and this was a completely preventable way to do it.

“I’d tell people if they want to get in the middle of a jawbreaker, it’s better to take the six weeks to get through to it than having six weeks suffering the consequences of biting it and having your jaw wired shut.”

Wasim had her jaw unwired on Monday, but in order to straighten her teeth, she will require braces because the event left all of her lower teeth “messed up.”
