‘A total shame’: Dozens without homes after fire destroys St. Clair County apartment

FOX 2: St. Clair County, MichiganAfter their building was damaged by a fire over the weekend, residents of 24 flats are currently putting their lives back together.

“I was being told to leave the building because it was on fire,” Anthony Marentette, a tenant at Bree Manor Apartments, claimed.

The backstory

Around midnight on Sunday, the unit started fire. Cold weather, according to fire officials, made battling the fires more challenging; at one point, a fire vehicle reportedly froze.

Everyone survived, although two police officers inhaled smoke and one resident was burned. But the building was considered a complete loss.

“It’s a total loss, a total shame,” Tricia Peacock, a resident, said.

According to sources, a candle in one of the flats may have contributed to the incident, however the exact reason is still being investigated.
