A Tragic Weekend In D.C.: Four Lives Lost in Separate Shootings, What Happened Next?

This weekend, four distinct shootings occurred throughout the District that resulted in four fatalities. As of right now, authorities have not made any announcements regarding any arrests related to these deadly crimes.

According to Metropolitan Police, a teen was shot and killed in Northwest about 4:15 p.m. on Sunday.

Following the response of law enforcement to gunfire noises in the 700 block of Missouri Avenue Northwest, Raymond Washington, 18, of Northeast, reportedly passed away in a hospital.

In connection with the killing, police are searching for a Black guy who was last seen carrying a black satchel bag, light blue trousers, black sneakers, and a gray tank top.

On Saturday, three hours separate gunshots claimed the lives of two persons.

Michael Sturgent Morris, 45, of Northeast was found shot inside an Ivy City apartment around 1:30 p.m., according to MPD.

According to Northeast police, the victim passed away in the house located on the 1800 block of Providence Street. Authorities believe a black pickup truck carrying two women and a guy is connected to the killing.

Dionzae Foote, 29, of Oxon Hill, Maryland, was reportedly suffering from a gunshot wound in Southeast around 4:10 p.m., according to investigators. At the scene on the 2700 block of Shipley Terrace Southeast, Mr. Foote passed away.

After a suspect was thought to have taken up residence in a nearby apartment, MPD set up a blockade. However, since the person of interest was nowhere to be found, police decided to call off the search. There is a silver sedan connected to the murder.

The violence of the weekend started late on Friday night when Jontae Donald Gilliam, 39, of Northeast, was discovered dead in the 600 block of Morton Street Northwest, from gunshot wounds, according to the police.

No suspects or people of interest in the incident have been identified or described by the police.

Police data shows that the number of homicides in the District this year has reached 91, which is a 24% decrease from the amount on the same date in 2023. This weekend’s killings have brought the total to 91.

The 274 killings that occurred in the District last year were the highest since the late 1990s.
