Amazon to Close Two California Facilities, Impacting Hundreds of Employees
Amazon is set to close two of its facilities in California, affecting more than 300 employees. According to notices filed on September 6, the company plans to shut down a warehouse in Irvine, which will impact 162 workers, and another facility in West Sacramento, affecting 159 employees. The layoffs include positions such as shippers, packers, and operations directors. These closures are part of Amazon’s ongoing evaluation of its operations to ensure efficiency and meet business needs.
Amazon spokesman Sam Stephenson confirmed the decision, stating that the company chose not to renew the leases at these locations. However, he emphasized that affected employees will have opportunities to find work within other Amazon facilities. This move aligns with Amazon’s broader efforts to optimize its network, a process that aims to benefit employees, customers, and partners alike.
The closures come shortly after Amazon put a pause on its plans for a major delivery center in San Francisco’s SoMa district. The project had faced opposition from local residents and labor unions, leading to an 18-month moratorium on new delivery facilities imposed by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. While this moratorium did not permanently halt the SoMa project, it may have influenced the company’s decision to abandon a separate 75,000-square-foot warehouse plan in Dogpatch.
