Andy Reid forced to make free agency signing after Kansas City Chiefs suffer another major injury blow
After backup place kicker Spencer Shrader was injured, the Kansas City Chiefs were forced to make a free agency acquisition.
Harrison Butker, the starting kicker, was placed on the injury reserve list earlier this month, which is when Shrader was signed.
The 25-year-old Shrader seemed to sustain an injury during Sunday’s Chiefs’ 30-27 victory over the Carolina Panthers, which he won with a field goal in the final seconds.
However, the defending Super Bowl champions have had to make another free agency acquisition because the former New York Jets kicker is now labeled as questionable for the Chiefs’ game against the Las Vegas Raiders on Friday.
Veteran kicker Matthew Wright has been added to the team by head coach Andy Reid as a backup.
Wright, 28, has played for eight different NFL clubs since being undrafted in 2019.

In his five years in the league, the former standout player from the University of Central Florida has been employed on the roster as well as on the practice squad.
During his roster-jumping career, he has played for the Detroit Lions, Jacksonville Jaguars, San Francisco 49ers, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers, and Atlanta Falcons.
He had, however, previously played for the Chiefs twice, both during the 2022 season.
During his time in college, he played for UCF, who finished undefeated in 2017.
During his NFL tenure, he has converted 43 out of 50 field goal tries, yielding an 86 percent success rate.
Additionally, 38 of his 40 PAT attempts have been successful.
In a post on X, the Chiefs verified that Wright is currently signed to the practice squad for the foreseeable future.
The Chiefs also announced the signing of offensive tackle D.J. Humphries and the termination of Truman Jones and Lucas Niang’s practice squad contracts.
With a 10-1 record right now, the Chiefs appear to be in a strong position to win their sixth Super Bowl in five years.
The goal for Andy Reid’s club is to become the first team in history to win three straight Super Bowls.
