Maricopa County, Arizona – An Arizona dad will serve decades in prison after being found guilty of “the severe physical abuse of his three children that ultimately led to the death of one child,” according to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office on May 30.
His children were three-month-old twins and a 14-month-old infant.
Earlier this year, Dontae Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse, two counts of attempted child abuse, and hazardous acts against children. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison and lifetime supervised probation. He will not be released throughout his 37-year sentence.

“The defendant admitted to beating and shaking his three children. One kid unfortunately died despite heroic measures by medical personnel,” County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated. “The abhorrent facts of this case show this defendant has no place in our community because if he can hurt his children this way, he can hurt anyone else.”
The assault was initially found on February 7, 2020, when Phoenix Police reacted to a report of child abuse from hospital staff.
Doctors reported that the twins had cracked ribs, bleeding in the brain, liver lacerations, and were badly dehydrated and emaciated. The third child had five rib fractures and a fractured finger.
