Baby left alone in freezing car at Wyandotte CVS sparks investigation
The baby was strapped in the back seat of a booster seat and was seen by a customer in the Wyandotte CVS parking lot.
FOX 2, WYANDOTTE, Mich.Being abandoned in a car without parents or guardians is a terrifying scenario that no infant should ever experience.
In the Wyandotte CVS parking lot, a shopper saw the infant by himself, strapped to a booster seat in the back.
It was chilly, and the toddler was alone in a red vehicle that was locked.
“I parked, got out and looked down, and I looked down and saw the kid and thought it was a doll,” stated the client. “He was in a coat, a winter coat, no socks, no shoes.”
The customer was worried about the frigid weather, stating that it was 26 degrees that day, but he was unsure of how long the child had been there. According to the witness, the vehicle was locked and off.
“I ran into the store real fast to make sure, like hey, maybe she wasn t in there,” stated the man. “Maybe she had an emergency, so I went and got the manager,” he replied.
The police were subsequently called by store staff, who entered and located the baby’s guardian.
“The officer went into the store, found her and brought her outside and just told her like, what are you doing, that s not okay,” said the officer. “She had no clue she did anything wrong.”
When asked by FOX 2 about the risks of leaving a child unattended, whether accidentally or because you’re going on a short vacation, Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said it’s just not worth the chance.
If you leave a child in a car that is too hot or too cold, where they could be abducted, it may be illegal and deemed child neglect. “It’s not logical,” Bouchard remarked.
Police say guardians who leave a youngster alone in a locked car risk a misdemeanor to a felony.
Investigations into the Wyandotte event are still ongoing.
