Bennett raises over $125k in first 24 hours as congressional candidate

Campaign fundraising is one of the earliest ways to establish oneself for new candidates who don’t have many political contacts. In that regard, Rebecca Bennett, a fresh Democratic contender for the 7th congressional district, is making good progress.

During the first day of the race, Bennett, a former Navy helicopter pilot who is currently employed in the healthcare sector, raised over $125,000—a significant amount for such a short period of time.According to her campaign, the average donation was $185 and came from 630 contributors.

Bennett stated in a statement, “The amount of support we’ve received since starting this campaign is nothing short of inspiring, and I’m so thankful to everyone who has already helped position us for success.” It’s obvious that the public is prepared for a new generation of leaders to bring common sense, dignity, and capable, caring governance back to Washington.

Bennett’s initial haul is among the highest first-day fundraising totals in New Jersey history, although precise comparisons are challenging due to inflation. Even though Sue Altman, the 2024 nominee for the 7th congressional district, was an exceptionally successful fundraiser and eventually raised over $6.2 million for her campaign, it took her a week to achieve the $100,000 mark.

Rep. Tom Kean Jr. (R-Westfield), a two-term Republican who ousted Rep. Tom Malinowski (D-Ringoes) in 2022, is the target of Bennett’s ultimate ambition. Although Kean defeated Altman 52% to 46% in 2024, the 7th district, which is in the suburban areas of Central and North Jersey, was one of the closest presidential districts in the country, and Kean is probably going to have fierce competition in 2026.

However, Bennett might need to pass a crowded Democratic primary that might include other candidates more well-known in the 7th district (like Malinowski or Altman) in order to get to Kean at all. Bennett is currently the lone contender, but that won’t last long because of how well she raised money early on, making it clear to other contenders that she is a real contender.
