Beware of this Amazon scam targeting victims in numerous states
DETROIT (FOX 2):The most recent scam using Amazon shipments has prompted police around the United States, including in Michigan, to issue warnings.
A warning against the practice, known as brushing scams, was placed by Saginaw police. This is how they operate:
What are brushing scams?
Packages that the victim did not order—usually from Amazon—are a part of brushing scams. These shipments typically have the recipient’s address and either state that they are from a reputable seller or lack a return address.
Police said that these shipments have a QR code that the receivers can scan to determine the sender’s identity. However, the victim’s personal information may be stolen from the website to which they are redirected.
What you should do
It’s acceptable to open and keep everything within a package that was sent to you but that you didn’t order. Nevertheless, avoid scanning any QR codes that might be present in the package.
