Bill Belichick makes first major decision as UNC head coach with fellow Pat McAfee Show star joining coaching staff

The North Carolina Tar Heels have announced NFL legend Bill Belichick as their new head coach.

After leading the New England Patriots to six Super Bowl championships in 23 years, Belichick voluntarily parted ways with the franchise in January.

The 72-year-old has been employed in the media for the majority of 2024 and frequently appears on ThePat McAfeeShow.

He will now, however, make his first foray into the world of collegiate football.

The University of North Carolina released the following statement: “The next head football coach at the University of North Carolina is Bill Belichick, an eight-time Super Bowl champion, the creator of one of the greatest sports dynasties in history, and one of the best leaders to ever coach the game.

“The University’s Board of Trustees and Board of Governors must approve a five-year contract that Belichick, the second-winning coach in NFL history, agreed to.

“A news conference will be held at a time to be determined to formally introduce the Tar Heels’ new coach.”

Belichick will appoint former NFL general manager Michael Lombardi to his coaching staff.

Both of them currently participate on The Pat McAfee Show after working together with the Patriots.

Additionally, Lombardi is the host of The Lombardi Line on VSiN, a TV streaming service, and The GM Shuffle podcast.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Coach Belichick at North Carolina,” the 65-year-old stated.

“I’m eager to get back to helping create a successful program, even though it will be difficult to leave my VSIN family.

Belichick recently appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and talked briefly about how he would manage a college football team.

“If I was in a college program, the college program would be a pipeline to the NFL for the players that had the ability to play in the NFL,” he stated.

“The program would be professional. strategies, coaching, diet, training, and methods that would be applicable in the NFL.

“It would be an NFL program, but not at the NFL level.”
